We’re happy to announce that we’re now accepting applications for the Winter 2016 Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy that will begin on January 20th!

The Sheriff’s Citizen Academy is designed to give citizen participants of a better understanding of the day-to-day operations of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.   This ten-week course gives citizens an in-depth look into career of law enforcement at the sheriff’s office and will introduce participants to the way the many units of the sheriff’s office work to make Clay County a safe place to live and work.  Participants in the Citizen Academy will learn about patrol function, detention, communications, investigations, court security and administrative functions of the sheriff’s office.  Instructors include members of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office command staff and field personnel.

The Citizen Academy is a 10-week program, with sessions held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m.  Each week a new division of the sheriff’s office is introduced and discussed as participants learn about the roles each unit has in the overall function of the sheriff’s office.  Participants will have the opportunity to observe communications and detention operations.  There will be hand-on activities including a basic self-defense class and introduction to some of the tools that deputies are trained to use.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older, have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions and must be a resident or business owner in Clay County.  Applicants must complete an application and sign a waiver to consent to a criminal history check in order to ensure security.
